School education is very important for students in any country. However, school education curriculum is different in every country. Among them, South Korean education is grade-oriented. Therefore, South Korean students have to compete with their friends on a national scale, and they depend more on their school record.
The happiness exponent survey was conducted based on 2011 International Comparison of Youth Happiness exponent in South Korea. According to this survey, the result shows that South Korea Students' grades are much lower than the average among the students in OECD countries. Among the result of the happiness exponent for students in OECD countries, South Korean students had the highest stress of 50.5 percent compared to students from other countries. Also, academic satisfaction was 18.7 percent lower than the average of 26.7 percent. Even about 9 percent of South Korean high school students had taught of committing suicide more than three times. As compared with other students from different grades, more high school students think about doing it for real.
In another study, the subjective happiness of South Korean students is the lowest. We have the lowest in the happiness exponent survey for the fourth year. However, compared to such low subjective happiness, South Korean students' material happiness is higher than most countries. As a result, compared to well-developed society in South Korea, it is identified that their students suffered from too much school work and burden. As the grade went up, the happiness exponent for South Korean students declined. Also, the happiness standard of the upper-grade students is money while the happiness standard of the lower grade students is family. These phenomena occurred because of the South Korean grade-oriented education system.
For solving these problems, the South Korean government has to revise the policy of students' education. Most students do not want to evaluate their school grades. Therefore, the government has to strive for the real happiness of their students. If they strive for education that students are contented, they can look forward to regaining happiness exponent of South Korean students more than students in OECD countries. It will be connected to the South Korean development.
