Korea celebrated the 100th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement in 1919 on Friday. A lot of people got out to the street, and they enjoyed the events to celebrate the March 1 Independence Movement. They watched a Samul-nori performance, and they walked the streets with Taegeukgi, a flag of South Korea. People who did not come out to the street hoisted the Taegeukgi in their house. Like this, Korean people have celebrated the March 1 Independence Movement sincerely. Then, what is March 1 Independence Movement and who is Yu Gwan-sun?

First, March 1 Independence Movement is resistance against Japanese colonial rule. Japan invaded the territory of Korea, and Korea became a colony of Japan in 1910. Japan governed Korea in 1910 to 1945 and people call that terms "The era under the colonial administration of imperial Japan". At that time, a lot of people resisted to Japanese military rule and many people got injured. They did a lot of demonstrations, and the March 1 Independence Movement is one of the biggest, famous demonstrations.

Second, Yu Gwan-sun is the central figure on the March 1 Independence Movement. She was 18 years old at that time. She shouted "Korea's independence hurrah!" in the street with the Taegeukgi, and she made a lot of people join the movement. Unfortunately, Yu Gwan-sun got arrested to Japanese police, and she went to jail. In jail, she got terrible tortures such as pulling out the nail and sexual torture. Nevertheless, she sang a song about Korea's independence. Nowadays, the record of the jail shows that Japanese prison officers were scared of her persistence. Eventually, she died in 1920 because of terrible tortures. She was 18 years old at that time, and the story about her became famous.
