The Hanwha Eagles officially announced Tuesday that the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League club accepted its manager Kim Sung-keun's offer to resign.

The 74-year-old manager took the helm of the Daejeon-based team at the beginning of the 2015 season as the team had been at the bottom of the league standings for years.

Kim was expected to bring life to the desperate team as he was surnamed "the god of baseball" for clinching three championship titles, but despite the expectations of many, Kim was let go when the Eagles remained ninth in the 10-team league with 18 wins and 26 losses.

The Eagles named their pitching coach Lee Sang-kun as the interim manager before the team's first game of a three-game series with the No. 1 Kia Tigers, but lost 8-13 at home.

The Eagles added that the interim boss will lead the team until every circumstance will be "normalized," and now it remains to be seen who will be the team's 11th manager.

Ever since its franchise catcher Yu Seung-an left the managing post after the 2004 season for poor performance, the Eagles began recruiting their new managers outside the club, but the results always ended in misfortune.

Kim In-sik, who had two championship titles with the Doosan Bears, led the team to the post season for three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2007, but after it failed to make the post season in 2008 and 2009, the team hired Han Dae-hwa as its new manager.

However, it went from bad to worse with Han at the helm. After finishing eighth in 2010 and sixth in 2011, Han was also let go in the middle of the 2012 season.

The desperate team pulled out its trump card to turn the situation around. They brought in Kim Euong-yong for the 2013 season. Although Kim led teams to the most Korean Series championship titles of 10 before the 2013 season, under his leadership the Eagles were still the doormat of the league, finishing ninth out of nine teams in the league.

Though the Eagles are no longer in the cellar when Kim Sung-keun took the helm beginning with the 2015 season, the team failed to advance to the post season, finishing sixth in 2015 and seventh in 2016.

Given that the Eagles suffered a series of failures with veteran managers, their choice will likely be different this time.

The most recent example of scouting a new manager in the middle of the season is the LG Twins. As its manager Kim Ki-tae resigned from the post in April of the 2014 season, the Seoul-based team named bench coach Cho Kye-hyeon as the interim manager for weeks and appointed the current manager Yang Sang-moon in mid-May.

Though Yang was employed when the Twins were at the bottom, he dramatically stabilized the dugout and led the team to the post season.
