There are many traditional events left in our village. These can make both young and elders recur their youth and neighbors concord. One of the traditional events in our village is the ssangyonggeo tug of war. It is held during Daeboreum in Pangyo. In this game, people make a few hundred feet rope for days and use it to pull on each side. When tugging of war finishes, people drink and eat delicious food together. In addition, a pungmul band performs.
Since 1970, before the Gyeongju expressway was made, there was a long market every Daeboreum. Ancestors made a few hundred feet rope and pulled its every side on the road. However, Pangyo was developed, so we cannot play tug of war on the road now.
In an interview with a grandmother who participated in ssangyonggeo tug of war, we heard her experiences. She told us that she volunteered at this event last year. Also, she said that she was proud and happy to work on this event with her friends. In addition, she said that she totally fell to the event's foods' attractive taste.
Pangyo was developed, so ssangyonggeo tug of war event can vanish. However, the society said they will implement this event every year. Although it cannot have the same impact as 40 to 50 years before, efforts to save this event deserves to get a big applause. It can be a very traditional event in South Korea. Let us save traditional events like ssangyonggeo tug-of-war.
