Do you know the day which named International Women’s day? International Women’s day is a day to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. How could International Women’s day be the world’s common interest?
Because of the industrial revolution and civil revolution, West Europe rapidly developed into capitalism system. The status of Women had changed greatly. Women had to do not only being in charge of home working, but also being labor class’s member. However capitalism system required severe working conditions to women than men.
Female worker’s dissatisfaction had bursted since 1857. A lot of women who worked in the textile factory demonstrated to claim about weak workshop and low wage. However the police turned against them and they had to be broken up.
Despite of government’s interruption, they organized International Labor Women’s conference. In 1908, There had been large scale demonstration one more time in America. More than 15 thousands female workers marched to New York City demanding improved wage, the right to vote and shorter work time.
In 1910, at the 2nd International Labor Women’s Conference, the German labor agitator Clara Zetkin and Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai held the “Women’s Day”. They proposed that every year in whole countries there should be a celebration on the same day which named Women’s day to promote women’s rights. This argument was accepted and the first Women’s day was held on March, 8.
In spite of hard efforts, Women’s day had been in dangerous situation because of the First World War. Each Social Democratic Parties disturb the Women’s day. Fortunately, International Labor Women’s Conference can maintain title under Norway’s support. Especially in Russia, Women’s day made big contribution on Russian Revolution in 1917.
Alexandra Kollatai and Russian feminist lead female laborers marched and shouted about overthrowing establishment, deteriorating living conditions, lack of basic food supplies and the shortage of goods. Finally, this demonstration move has been largely successful and the Soviet Union has celebrated Women’s Day on February 23 since 1922.
In 1975, the United Nations proclaimed March 8 as the International Women’s Day. Now, it is being celebrated in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkemenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.
