LOTTE held a fireworks display at LOTTE WORLD TOWER on April 2nd Sunday from 7:30pm until 9:30pm. The event was to celebrate the opening of the 555-meter skyscraper, Monday. LOTTE WORLD TOWER is a 123-floor, 554.5-metre (1,819 ft) supertall skyscraper that finished external construction on March 17, 2016. It is currently the tallest building in the OECD, and is the 5th tallest building in the world.

The opening ceremony started at 7:30pm with performances by DJ DOC, Hong Jin-Young, acappella group D.I.A, Songpa Philhamonic Orchestara and Songpa Boys and Girls Choir. A total of 30,000 fireworks lit up the night sky for 11 minutes from 9 p.m, making it longer than the famed New Year’s Day fireworks shows at Taiwan’s Taipei 101 and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Recreational activities and giveaway events were held after the fireworks display. At nearby Seokchon Lake, which is part of the LOTTE WORLD complex, an installation by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman of “Rubber Duck” fame was setup on Saturday. The piece, “Sweet Swans,” features a family of rubber swans between 3.5 and 16 meters tall.

Groupe F, a French designer of pyrotechnic displays, took charge of designing the fireworks show and installing the equipment. The company is well regarded in the industry, having participated in designing the Taipei and Dubai shows, as well as events at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. “The company is making every effort possible to ensure the show and festival runs without safety issues” Lotte Corporation CEO Park Hyun-chul said. However not all believed it to be a good idea. "They burned 400 million won a minute," said a woman on way to the subway, referring to the cost of the fireworks, an extravagance that other people also noted. "They could have used it more wisely."

The district's firefighting authority said it received 13 calls requesting emergency treatment. Callers complained of painful eyes, abnormal heart beats, knee cramps, and back problems. None of the problems were life-threatening. The district roads were very busy as people scrambled to board taxis, buses and other transport. Jamsil subway station was crowded for an hour after the fireworks ended. A total of 1,500 security personnel struggled to keep the crowd under control.
