KCON 2017 was successfully held in Mexico for the first time on March 17-18 .
KCON, which stands for Korea Convention, is an annual Korean wave convention held in different locations across the world, organized by CJ E&M.
The Hallyu event drew some 33,000 visitors participating in K-pop dance classes, meet-and-greet events with Hallyu stars and various workshops about food, beauty and Korean language.
In the evening concerts, the event featured a star-studded lineup: Bangtan Boys (BTS), Eric Nam, EXID and NCT 127 for the first night, and Astro, Monsta X, Infinite H and Red Velvet for the second evening.
The pop culture convention started as an one-day event in 2012 in Irvine, California and expanded to other regions including New York, Japan, Paris and Abu Dhabi. Mexico and Australia are its new targets this year.
Mexico, the first KCON venue this year, is the second largest economy in Latin America after Brazil.
“(The success of KCON Mexico) is significant in that the convention introduced thorough Korean lifestyle to the Central and South America where there is high popularity of K-pop,” said Shin Hyung-kwan, managing director of music contents at CJ E&M.
Other new venue is Australia. KCON will visit Australia in September for the first time. The exact date and venue has not been confirmed yet.
KCON 2017 will now head to Japan from May 19-21, then New York from June 23-24 and Los Angeles from Aug. 18-20, before heading to Australia in September.
