Qatar Petroleum(QP) has ordered a 190 billion dollar amount of LNG ship to South Korean shipbuilding companies in June 2020.

According to Qatar Petroleum(QP), more than 100 LNG ships are necessary within a few years. So QP presented the LNG ship projects to the 3 large Korean shipbuilders; Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Samsung Heavy Industries, for over 100 ships to QP from now throughout the year 2027.

LNG, Liquefied Natural Gas, is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, at about 260 degrees in Fahrenheit, for shipping and storage. LNG is normally used in heating and cooking as well as generating electricity and meeting other industrial needs. A carrier that carries this material is the LNG ship.

From the past, South Korea has been remarked globally in the shipbuilding field. Those three large shipbuilders have constructed various kinds of ships since the 1970s. Thanks to over 40 years of know-how and the advanced technologies in the shipbuilding industry, the Korean shipbuilders have been the world’s No.1's in the industry. They also have some incredible ways of ship construction technologies such as the shipbuilding technique on the floating dock. That is the shipbuilding technique on the barge. They construct half of the body and then weld it on the sea. This kind of high technology in the South Korean shipbuilding industry might have attracted Qatar and succeeded in bringing the $190 billion of the contract to South Korea.
