On April 16th, 2017 Sewol sank off the coast near the port of Jindo. Three years later, on March 22th, 2017 Sewol salvage work was started by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The Sewol salvage work was divided into two parts. First, operators used two barges to raise a lifting beam stationed under the hull. And then the Sewol was put on semi-submersible vessels. Lastly, the Sewol search operation began.
It took 3 years for the Sewol to break water to find 9 missing people and the reason why it sank, Why did the Sewol salvage work take three years? First, the government decides whether execute salvage work or not during the first year. Then, the goverment had to decide which company would do the recovery. Sewol salvage work had to wait because of ocean weather and ocean current. But many people feel sorry so the government reduced the waiting time, So Sewol broke water early.
'The raising of the semisubersimersible ship 13 meters above the water and moving it onto the ship, which is the most affected by weather conditions, should be done by Friday which is the last day of the neap tide period.' Lee Cheol-jo, the official in charge of the operation, said.
"It is a relief to see the ferry with my eyes The salvage of the ferry was what all the mothers and fathers have wanted" Lee Keum-hui, mother of a missing student Jo Eun-hwa, said.
Grieving people's parents wanted their children to come back earnestly.
Now, the Sewol comes up on land and the search for missing people commences. All people in Korea wish to find the 9 missing people as soon as possible.
