MOXIE is the abbreviation of Mars Oxygen in Situ Resource Utilization Experiment. Through solid oxide electrolysis, carbon dioxide is turned into oxygen. Also, Mars' air enters MOXIE through a filter. A mechanical pump compresses it into an Earth-like setting and transfers carbon dioxide to an electrolysis system, and the gas is divided into carbon monoxide and oxygen. Lastly, to get pure oxygen, it releases carbon monoxide, and only oxygen will remain.
Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment helps to improve technology because oxygen is an important resource. In outer space, oxygen is essential not only to breathe, but it is also an important rocket fuel component. Because of MOXIE, the South Korea space center is planning to propel a new experiment with new technology, MOXIE. Mars' atmosphere has an abundance of potential sources of oxygen, with a carbon dioxide ratio of 95-96 percent. It is difficult for MOXIE to meet this demand, but it is expected to be the basis for the development of larger oxygen exchange units in the future.
This test produced about 5.4 grams of oxygen per hour that is the amount one person can breathe for about ten minutes. Also, the product gas is almost 100 percent pure oxygen. NASA announced the future plan of MOXIE. First, they will verify whether MOXIE operates well in an actual situation. Next, they plan to have an experiment with different atmospheric conditions, times, and seasons on Mars. Lastly, they will observe how MOXIE works in an extreme situation.
These days, the world pays attention to outer space and tries to develop new technology in space. Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment is well new to South Korea because South Korea also plans to advance its aerospace enterprise.
