Teenagers nowadays are the generation that is influenced by mass media. The social atmosphere from mass media that fat body type is negative makes the teenagers try to lose weight these days. According to the survey which was implemented and targeted to teenagers, 50.4 percent of the respondents tried diet. Especially, 40.4 percent of the respondents who tried to lose weight tried it when they were middle school students. Like this, the problem of teenagers losing weight by force has become an issue.
Teenage weight loss plan that does not match their age causes many additional problems. First, strenuous losing weight damages their health. It causes anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of weight. Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging and excessive concern with body shape and weight. These eating disorders hamper growth by affecting their growth hormone and muscles. A wrong diet causes hair loss, too. Also, wrong weight loss habits cause psychological problems. Teenagers are obsessed with their body shape and weight. They fear gaining weight, and their body shape becomes an important factor to estimate themselves. These problems become the main reasons for diet depression.
Like this, a teenage weight loss plan that does not match their age brings up many physical and psychological problems. It causes not only eating disorders but also depression. The pediatrician, Sim Kae Sik, said many teenagers tried to lose weight that is not suitable for their age despite their body development is normal. Also, he said that correcting wrong dining customs and increasing the feeling of fullness by eating warm food are good ways to form correct eating habits.
