In this modern society, coffee has become a thing of daily necessity, especially for teens and test-takers. They consume a considerable amount of caffeine through coffee, or high-caffeine energy drinks, to fight sleepiness. However, in the situation of teenagers ingesting caffeine to get rid of sleep and strengthen their concentration, we need to know what are actually the effects of caffeine.

The negative side effects of the ingestion of caffeine are anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. In rare cases, liver damage, renal failure, respiratory disorder, convulsion, psychotic symptoms, rhabdomyolysis, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and even death had been reported. Also for those who consume caffeine habitually, decreased concentration, headache, a sense of fatigue, and annoyance are the withdrawal symptoms.

According to a study by Soonchunhyang University Department of Health Administration and Management in 2016, teenagers' high caffeine intake increased suicidal ideation. For the case of high school students, those who consume high-caffeine energy drinks one to two times a week had 1.34 times higher risk of suicidal thoughts. For those who consume three to four times a week, it was 1.99 times higher. For those who consume five to six times a week, it was 2.57 times higher, and those who consume more than one time a day had a 4.25 times higher rate compared to those who do not consume caffeine at all. They say that the negative side effects of caffeine intake such as insomnia, palpitations, and neurology could increase the frequency of suicidal thoughts.

▲ Some experts say that caffeine can cause suicide.

Scholars do not only suggest the harm of caffeine intake. According to the study of Dr. Lucas and his students in the graduate school of health at Harvard University, people who consume two to three cups had a fifty percent lesser chance to think about suicide compared to those who do not consume caffeine at all. This is because caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, and such neurotransmitter produced by caffeine accelerates the production of dopamine and serotonin which act as a light antidepressant. There are also studies that say that caffeine intake lessens the risk of developing diabetes by about 33 percent for those who drink four cups of coffee compared to those who drink lesser than four cups. Another study says that it lessens the chance to die of cardiovascular disease.

Napoleon, known as the hero of France, said coffee is what makes him awake, especially a strong one. And also coffee gives him warmth, and it evokes pain accompanied by unusual strength, joy, and pleasure. As he said, the right amount of caffeine may help, but overconsuming it may evoke side effects. So try to consume a proper amount of caffeine for your health.
