Seven Korean male athletes who got medals at PyeongChang Winter Olympics are exempted from military service.
The seven athletes are skeleton slider, Yun Sung-bin, bobsledder, Seo Young-woo, speed skaters, Cha Min-kyu, Kim Tae-yun, and Chung Jae-won, and short trackers, Lim Hyo-jun and Hwang Dae-heon.
Yun, whose age is 23, is the first Asian who won an Olympic medal in sliding sports. He got a gold medal at the skeleton with his 'Ironman' helmet. Seo, 26, was a member of four-men bobsleigh team who won a silver medal, joint with the Germany team.
Cha, 24, got the silver medal at 500-meter speed skating. Kim, 23, got a bronze medal in 1000 meter, and Chung, 16, who took a silver medal in the men's team pursuit, that will be eligible for the special exemption. Lim, 21, got a gold medal at 1500 meter and bronze at 500 meters in the short track, though he had a lot of injuries, and Hwang, 18, got the silver medal at 500 meters.
According to the Korean law, if the male athletes grab gold medals in Asian Games or get any medals in the Olympics, they will get an exemption from the compulsory military service, but unlike others, they will get four weeks of basic training. After that, they will become the servicemen in arts and sports, according to the conscription law. Officially, they will be soldiers for two years and ten months. However, they will be free to take apart in international athletics competition and compete for their team.
Chung, whose age is 16, became the youngest athlete who will be eligible for the military service in this
Olympics. The youngest athlete who got exempted from the military service of all time was Park Sung-bin. He won the gold medal in the men's optimist one-man dinghy event in Incheon Asian Games in 2014, whose age was 14.
