On January 3rd, Samsung Electronics said it sold 6.7 million 5G smartphones, including the Galaxy S10 5G, the Galaxy Note 10, the Galaxy A90 5G and the Galaxy Fold, in the global market last year. As of November last year, Samsung Electronics accounted for 53.9 percent of the global 5G smartphone market, as the data showed.
Samsung Electronics plans to release a series of new 5G-based Galaxy S models and tablet PCs during the first quarter of this year. Its plans are to become the world’s first tablet PC equipped with 5G mobile telecommunication, provide new user experiences through dialogue and grab the upper hand in the global market. Based on the performance of high-performance tablet PCs, it is predicted that 5G contents such as cloud games, UHD videos, AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality), which are really important for immediate input, will be freely enjoyed while moving around.
The 5G smartphone market accounts for 1 percent of global smartphone sales, according to the global market research firm, Counterpoint Research. It is expected to grow to 18 percent this year. According to No Tae-moon, the president of Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Business Department, 2020 will be the year when Samsung Electronics will have a more diverse portfolio of 5G devices. A representative of Samsung Electronics also said that Samsung Electronics promoted the development of 5G markets last year by contributing to 3GPP standards and covering all 5G processes from semiconductor and mobile devices to telecommunication equipment.
